You've picked Malaysia. Maybe it's the tuition, maybe it's an offer from a branch campus of an Australian university, or maybe it's simply that Kuala Lumpur is about four hours from Dhaka by air, not half a day. Now comes the part that makes most families nervous: the paperwork.
Here's the good news. The Malaysia student visa process for Bangladeshi students isn't complicated — but it is strict about order. Your university sends your application to EMGS. EMGS and the Immigration Department issue an eVAL. You apply for a Single Entry Visa online. Then your Student Pass is only finished after you land and clear a medical check. Skip a step, or upload a blurry passport scan, and weeks disappear.
This guide walks you through every stage: the documents, the 2026 fees in ringgit and taka, realistic timelines, and the mistakes that most often hold files back. If you're still comparing universities, our complete guide to studying in Malaysia from Bangladesh covers courses, entry routes and costs first.
Why Bangladeshi Students Are Choosing Malaysia in 2026
Malaysia is no longer a "backup" destination for Bangladeshi students. It's one of the busiest routes out of Dhaka, and the official numbers show it.
11,401 Bangladeshi students are currently studying at higher education institutions in Malaysia — a 45% rise on the previous year. EMGS Chief Executive Officer Novie Tajuddin shared the figure at a Bangladesh–Malaysia universities meeting at the University Grants Commission in Dhaka.
Source: The Business Standard, 18 May 2026The growth isn't a one-year blip. Between January and November 2025, Bangladesh was Malaysia's second-largest source of new international students, behind only China.
Bangladeshi enrolments in Malaysia reached 8,957 in January–November 2025, up 47% from 6,103 the year before — second only to China (29,388).
Source: Malay Mail, 18 December 2025Why the surge? Three things come up again and again in counselling sessions. First, cost: tuition and living expenses are a fraction of what families pay for the UK or Australia. Second, recognisable degrees: several Australian and UK universities run full campuses in Malaysia, so you can earn the same brand of degree closer to home. Third, comfort: English-taught programmes, halal food everywhere, a large Bangladeshi community, and a short flight for parents who want to visit.
In 2023, applications from Bangladesh jumped 94% to around 6,570, making Bangladesh the fastest-growing source of students for Malaysia that year.
Source: ICEF Monitor, "Malaysia's growing appeal as a study destination", January 2025There's a flip side, though. More applicants means more people making the same avoidable mistakes — wrong documents, mismatched names, late responses to EMGS. The rest of this guide is about making sure you're not one of them.
Malaysia Student Visa Requirements for Bangladeshi Students
First, a quick clarification that saves a lot of confusion. What everyone calls the "Malaysia student visa" is really three things working together. There's an eVAL (electronic Visa Approval Letter), a Single Entry Visa to get you into the country, and a Student Pass that's endorsed in your passport after you arrive. You don't apply for these separately at an embassy. It all starts with one EMGS application.
To be eligible, you'll need:
- An offer letter from a Malaysian university or college that is approved to take international students.
- A passport valid for at least 18 months — this is EMGS's stated minimum, and it catches a lot of Bangladeshi applicants whose passports are close to renewal.
- Academic records for everything you've studied so far: SSC and HSC (or O and A Levels), plus diploma or bachelor's transcripts if you have them.
- An English proficiency result such as IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, MUET or Cambridge. EMGS warns that leaving this out can delay your application.
- A signed Health Declaration Form. Malaysia dropped pre-arrival medical screening in June 2019; you declare your health before you fly and take the medical after you land.
- Mandatory medical insurance for the length of your pass, bought as part of the EMGS process.
- A personal bond, signed by your institution. For Bangladeshi nationals, EMGS sets the bond at RM750.
One more rule people miss: for higher education, the Immigration Department requires you to be outside Malaysia when the Student Pass application is submitted. Don't fly in on a tourist visa hoping to "sort it out there".
IELTS and English requirements
EMGS doesn't set a single IELTS score — your university does. As a general guide, bachelor's programmes commonly ask for IELTS 6.0 and master's programmes for 6.5. Some universities accept their own English test or let you start with an English programme first. Whatever you submit, make sure it's in your EMGS file; a missing English certificate is one of the quickest ways to stall an otherwise complete application.
Do you need a bank statement?
We hear this question in almost every session. The short answer: EMGS's published checklist for a new Student Pass doesn't list a bank statement. That said, some universities ask for proof of funds during admission, and you'll need a clear plan for paying tuition from Bangladesh anyway. Keep six months of your sponsor's bank statements and a sponsorship letter ready so nothing holds you up if they're requested.
Documents Required for a Malaysia Student Visa (Bangladesh Checklist)
Here's the document list EMGS works from, with the practical detail that matters for applicants from Bangladesh. Scan everything in colour and keep all four corners visible.
Passport copy
Bio-data page, every page with a visa, and the observation page. At least 18 months' validity.
Passport photo
35mm × 45mm with a white background. EMGS has an online photo checker — use it before you upload.
Offer letter
From your Malaysian institution. Check your name, passport number and course details against your passport.
Academic certificates
SSC and HSC certificates and marksheets (or O/A Level results), plus any diploma or degree transcripts.
English test result
IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, MUET, Cambridge or another test your university accepts.
Health Declaration Form
Completed and signed. This replaced the old pre-arrival medical in 2019.
Personal bond
Signed by your institution. RM750 for Bangladeshi nationals — ask your university how they handle it.
Medical insurance
Purchased through the EMGS process, covering at least your first 12 months.
Check that your name is spelled exactly the same on your passport, SSC certificate, HSC certificate and offer letter. A missing letter or a swapped surname is one of the most common reasons a Bangladeshi file comes back with questions. Fix spelling differences before you apply — your counsellor can tell you which supporting document works for your case.
The Malaysia Student Visa Process for Bangladeshi Students: 10 Steps
Here's the full sequence, in order — from choosing a course in Dhaka to holding a Student Pass in Kuala Lumpur.
Shortlist universities and fix your intake
Start with the course and the university, not the visa. Confirm the institution accepts international students and pick your intake — most Malaysian universities run two main intakes a year, and some add a third. You can compare options on our list of universities in Malaysia for Bangladeshi students.
Apply for admission
Send your academic certificates, passport copy and English result to the university. The admissions team checks your eligibility and may ask for an interview or extra documents for some courses.
Receive and check your offer letter
Read the offer line by line. Your name, date of birth and passport number must match your passport exactly, and the course and duration must be correct. Accept it and pay whatever the university needs before it starts your visa application — some ask for a deposit first.
Your EMGS Student Pass application is submitted
Most Bangladeshi students have their application submitted by the university through EMGS's institutional system (STARS). You can also apply yourself on the EMGS website or the EMGS HUB app after accepting your offer. Either way, this is where you upload documents and pay the EMGS fees.
Document verification and tracking
EMGS screens your documents and runs its checks before your file goes to the Immigration Department. Track your status online. If EMGS flags a missing or unclear document, respond the same day — your file effectively waits until you do.
Receive your eVAL
Once your application is approved, your electronic Visa Approval Letter is issued. It's valid for six months. Download it, print a few copies, and don't book a non-refundable flight until you have it.
Apply for your Single Entry Visa online
Bangladesh is on EMGS's list of countries that need a Single Entry Visa (SEV). Students apply through the official eVISA portal using their eVAL: upload your passport, photo and eVAL, pay the visa fee, and download the approved visa.
Submit your MDAC and fly to Malaysia
Since 1 January 2024, students arriving with a visa approval letter must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), up to three days before landing. Keep your passport, printed eVAL, visa, offer letter and insurance details in your hand luggage, not your checked bag.
Complete your medical within 7 working days
After you land, you must finish a post-arrival medical screening at an EMGS panel clinic or your university's in-house clinic within seven working days. If you miss it, EMGS can't start endorsing your Student Pass.
Get your Student Pass endorsed and collect your i-Kad
Your university's international office submits your passport for endorsement. The Student Pass sticker goes into your passport and you receive an i-Kad, the ID card international students carry in Malaysia. Keep copies of everything — you'll need them again at renewal.
Malaysia Student Visa Fees in 2026 (RM and BDT)
EMGS changed its fee schedule on 13 November 2025 — its first processing-fee increase in more than a decade. Many Bangladeshi websites still quote the old numbers, so check any figure you're given against the official schedule before you pay.
Here's what a Bangladeshi student starting a degree at a university in Peninsular Malaysia should expect to pay on the EMGS and immigration side:
| Fee | RM | Approx. BDT* | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMGS processing fee | 1,600 | 48,300 | New pass of more than 6 and up to 12 months |
| eVAL processing fee | 150 | 4,500 | New applications only |
| Service Tax (8% SST) | 140 | 4,200 | Charged on the processing and eVAL fees |
| Medical screening | 250 | 7,550 | Peninsular Malaysia (RM350 in Sarawak); optional via EMGS if your university has its own clinic |
| Medical insurance (12 months) | 456–958 | 13,800–28,900 | Depends on insurer and plan |
| Student Pass | 60 | 1,800 | Sticker endorsed in your passport |
| i-Kad | 50 | 1,500 | Student ID card |
| Multiple Entry Visa | 20 | 600 | Rate for Bangladeshi nationals |
| Estimated total | ≈ 2,726–3,228 | ≈ 82,300–97,500 | Before tuition and university fees |
*Converted at about BDT 30.2 per ringgit (mid-market, late September 2026). Banks charge more, so budget a little extra. Line items from the EMGS Schedule of Fees updated 13 November 2025. Confirm your exact total with EMGS's official fee calculator.
Two more costs to plan for
- Personal bond — RM750 (about BDT 22,650). This is the bond amount EMGS sets for Bangladeshi nationals. It's signed by your institution; some universities collect it from students as a refundable deposit and others don't, so ask before you budget.
- Single Entry Visa. The High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka lists a visa fee of RM20 for Bangladeshi passports. The eVISA portal adds its own processing charge, which it shows before you pay.
Keep in mind these are visa and immigration costs only. Tuition, accommodation and flights are separate — for the full picture, see what studying in Malaysia really costs in 2026, and check the scholarships Bangladeshi students actually get in Malaysia before you rule a university out on price.
Be careful with "visa packages" that bundle EMGS fees and agency charges into one number. EMGS fees are published. You're entitled to see exactly what goes to EMGS and what goes to anyone else.
Malaysia Student Visa Processing Time: How Long Each Stage Takes
EMGS's client charter is 14 working days for a complete application. That covers the EMGS stage only — and "complete" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. From offer letter to Student Pass sticker, plan for roughly two to three months.
| Stage | Typical time | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Admission and offer letter | Varies by university | Complete documents, course, intake |
| EMGS application to eVAL | 14 working days for a complete file; plan for 3–8 weeks | Missing or unclear documents, busy pre-intake periods |
| Single Entry Visa (eVISA) | Usually a few working days | Photo and passport quality; apply as soon as the eVAL arrives |
| MDAC | Up to 3 days before arrival | Takes minutes online |
| Post-arrival medical | Within 7 working days of arrival | Clinic availability, university schedule |
| Student Pass endorsement | A few weeks after passport submission | University and Immigration workload |
If classes start in September, aim to have your EMGS application submitted by June. That leaves room for a document query or two without putting your intake at risk.
EMGS, eVAL and SEV: Three Terms You Must Understand
What Is EMGS?
Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) is the company owned by Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education that handles visa applications for international students in higher education. Every university applicant passes through it. EMGS checks your documents, collects your fees and insurance, coordinates with the Immigration Department, and later helps endorse your Student Pass.
Because everything runs through EMGS, your file isn't lodged at the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka. You track your EMGS Student Pass application online, and your university's international office sees the same status you do.
What Is eVAL and Why Is It Important?
eVAL stands for electronic Visa Approval Letter. It's the document that shows Malaysia has approved you to come in as a student. You'll need it to apply for your Single Entry Visa, to board your flight, and to clear immigration when you land.
Your eVAL is valid for six months from the date it's issued. If your intake moves or you decide to defer, talk to your university before it expires — an expired eVAL can't be used to enter Malaysia.
Do Bangladeshi Students Need a Single Entry Visa?
Yes. Bangladesh is on EMGS's list of countries whose nationals need a Single Entry Visa (SEV) before entering Malaysia. According to the Immigration Department of Malaysia, students from visa-required countries must apply for the SEV exclusively through the official eVISA portal.
Two practical points. Use only the official government portal; there are look-alike "visa service" websites that charge extra for the same form. And apply as soon as your eVAL arrives, because no airline will board you without the visa.
Student Pass vs visa: what's the difference?
Your Single Entry Visa gets you into Malaysia once. Your Student Pass is what lets you stay and study. It's endorsed in your passport after you arrive and renewed for as long as your course runs, and the i-Kad is the ID card that goes with it.
What Happens After You Arrive in Malaysia?
Landing at KLIA isn't the finish line. Your Student Pass is only complete after a few steps on the ground, and the first one has a hard deadline.
At the airport, clear immigration with your passport, visa and printed eVAL. EMGS runs an International Student Arrival Centre (ISAC) at KLIA for new students, and if you've arranged airport pickup, you'll be told exactly where to meet.
Life on a Student Pass: what to expect
Arrive and register
- Clear immigration with your eVAL and visa
- Medical screening within 7 working days
- Hand in your passport for Student Pass endorsement
- Collect your i-Kad once it's ready
Stay compliant
- Renew your Student Pass on time (renewal processing is RM250 + SST at universities)
- Keep your medical insurance active
- Attendance and results are checked at renewal
- Part-time work only within the rules below
Plan your next move
- Malaysia's Graduate Pass list doesn't currently include Bangladesh
- Progress to a master's or PhD on a new Student Pass
- Or return home with an internationally recognised degree
That Graduate Pass point is worth pausing on. EMGS's Graduate Pass lets eligible graduates stay for 12 months after graduation, but only certain nationalities qualify — and at the time of writing, Bangladesh isn't one of them. If anyone tells you otherwise, ask them to show you the official list.
Can you work part-time as a student?
Yes, but only within tight limits. According to EMGS, international students may work up to 20 hours a week only during semester breaks or holidays of more than seven days. The work must be in approved sectors such as restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels, and it needs prior Immigration Department approval. Breaking these rules can cost you your Student Pass.
Be wary of anyone who sells Malaysia as a work route. In August 2025, Malaysia's Higher Education Minister publicly rejected a viral claim that 10,000 Bangladeshi students would be allowed to work in the country. Choose Malaysia for the degree, not for a job promise.
Common Reasons Malaysia Student Visa Applications Get Delayed
Most problems are delays rather than refusals — but a delay at the wrong time can still cost you your intake. These are the issues that come up most often, and how to avoid each one.
Outright refusals usually come from bigger problems: academic documents that can't be verified, misrepresentation on a form, or issues raised in background checks. The fix is simple — submit genuine documents and answer every question truthfully.
How to Choose a Malaysia Student Visa Consultant in Dhaka
You don't need a consultant to apply — you can deal with a university and EMGS directly. What a good consultant adds is judgement: which university fits your grades and budget, which documents need fixing, and what to do when EMGS asks a question. A bad one adds cost and risk.
Ask these five questions before you hand over your documents:
- Are the counsellors personally certified — for example through ICEF or British Council training — and will they show you the credentials?
- Will they give you the EMGS fees in writing, separate from any charges of their own?
- Do they recommend universities based on your results and budget, or push the same one to everyone?
- Who checks your documents before EMGS submission, and what exactly do they check?
- Do they promise jobs, "guaranteed" visas or shortcuts? If so, walk away. No consultant controls an Immigration decision.

Who Should Study in Malaysia from Bangladesh?
Malaysia suits a wide range of Bangladeshi students. These groups tend to get the most out of it.
HSC and A Level graduates
Enter a foundation, diploma or bachelor's programme depending on your results. The pathway system suits students who want a structured start.
Diploma and polytechnic holders
You may qualify for advanced entry or a credit transfer route, which can save a year or more of study and fees.
Graduates planning a master's
One- to two-year programmes taught in English. Postgraduate students can also apply to bring dependants, which most bachelor's students can't.
Students who want a global brand, close to home
Branch campuses such as Monash University Malaysia let you earn a well-known university's degree a short flight from Dhaka.
If your main goal is full-time work while you study, Malaysia isn't the answer. The Student Pass doesn't allow it, and the rules are enforced.

Key Takeaways: The Malaysia Student Visa Process for Bangladeshi Students
The Malaysia student visa process for Bangladeshi students comes down to doing the right things in the right order. If you remember three things, make it these:
- Everything starts with EMGS. Your offer letter starts the EMGS application, and a complete file is what gets you the 14-working-day turnaround.
- Budget with the 2026 numbers. Expect roughly RM2,700–3,200 (about BDT 82,000–97,500) in EMGS and immigration costs before tuition, plus the personal bond if your university collects it.
- It isn't over when you land. Submit your MDAC before you fly, finish your medical within seven working days, and get your Student Pass endorsed.
Get those right and Malaysia is one of the smoothest study destinations open to Bangladeshi students. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your file, book a free session with a uniThink counsellor.
Malaysia Student Visa FAQs for Bangladeshi Students
How long does the Malaysia student visa process take for Bangladeshi students?
EMGS's client charter is 14 working days for a complete application, but that covers only the EMGS stage. Add admission, your Single Entry Visa and travel, and most Bangladeshi students should plan for two to three months from offer letter to arrival. After landing, you have seven working days to finish your medical. Incomplete documents are the main reason timelines stretch.
How much does a Malaysia student visa cost from Bangladesh?
Under EMGS's fee schedule updated on 13 November 2025, a new Student Pass at a university in Peninsular Malaysia costs roughly RM2,726–3,228 (about BDT 82,300–97,500). That covers the RM1,600 processing fee, RM150 eVAL fee, 8% SST, medical screening, insurance, Student Pass, i-Kad and Multiple Entry Visa. The personal bond for Bangladeshi nationals is RM750. Tuition is separate.
Do Bangladeshi students need a Single Entry Visa for Malaysia?
Yes. Bangladesh is on EMGS's list of countries whose nationals need a Single Entry Visa (SEV) before entering Malaysia. Once your eVAL is issued, you apply for the SEV through the official eVISA portal of the Immigration Department of Malaysia. The High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka lists the visa fee for Bangladeshi passports as RM20, plus a processing charge shown before payment.
Is IELTS required for a Malaysia student visa?
EMGS asks for an English proficiency result — IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, MUET, Cambridge or another test your university accepts — and warns that leaving it out can delay processing. Your university sets the minimum score. Bachelor's programmes commonly ask for IELTS 6.0 and master's programmes for 6.5, and some universities offer their own English test or an English programme instead.
Is a bank statement required for a Malaysia student visa from Bangladesh?
EMGS's published checklist for a new Student Pass doesn't include a bank statement. However, some universities ask for proof of funds during admission, and you'll need a clear way to pay tuition from Bangladesh. Keep six months of your sponsor's bank statements and a sponsorship letter ready so you can respond quickly if they're requested.
Can I apply for a Malaysia student visa myself?
Yes. After accepting an offer from a Malaysian institution, you can submit your Student Pass application yourself through the EMGS website or the EMGS HUB app. In practice, most universities submit it for you through EMGS's institutional system. A consultant isn't mandatory; a good one helps you choose the right university and catch document problems before they cause delays.
Can Bangladeshi students work part-time in Malaysia?
Only within strict limits. EMGS says international students may work up to 20 hours a week during semester breaks or holidays longer than seven days, in approved sectors such as restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets or hotels, and only with prior Immigration Department approval. Breaking these rules can cost you your Student Pass, so plan your budget without relying on a job.
What is eVAL, and how long is it valid?
eVAL is the electronic Visa Approval Letter issued once your Student Pass application is approved. You need it to apply for your Single Entry Visa, to board your flight and to clear immigration on arrival. The eVAL is valid for six months from the date of issue, so if your intake is delayed, speak to your university before it expires.
