Is MBBS in Malaysia BMDC Recognized? 2026 Guide
BMDC's route for MBBS in Malaysia: the 40-mark admission test rule, Eligibility Certificate, Registration Qualifying Exam and one-year internship.
Is MBBS in Malaysia BMDC recognised? BMDC's public list of recognised colleges covers Bangladeshi medical and dental colleges only, so there is no "approved Malaysian universities" list to check. What BMDC does set is the route a foreign-trained doctor must follow to practise in Bangladesh.
The 5-step BMDC route for MBBS in Malaysia:
1. Score at least 40 out of 100 in Bangladesh's central MBBS admission test (rule in force since the 2022-23 session).
2. Get a BMDC Eligibility Certificate before you leave (application fee Tk 1,000).
3. Study in person at a medical school on the Malaysian Medical Council's recognised list, and keep your passport and visa records.
4. After graduating, pass BMDC's Registration Qualifying Examination, held twice a year (processing fee Tk 8,000).
5. Complete a one-year internship in Bangladesh, then register with BMDC.
For the 2025-26 session, students needed a combined SSC and HSC GPA of 8.5 and at least 3.5 in HSC Physics, Chemistry and Biology to sit the admission test. These rules change each session, so check the latest BMDC and DGHS notices before you accept an offer. uniThink's certified counsellors check your results against the current rules for free.
A Malaysian MBBS counts in Bangladesh only if you follow BMDC's route, before you leave and after you return.

Is MBBS in Malaysia BMDC Recognised? The Short Answer
It's the question every family asks, and the honest answer is more useful than a simple "yes". BMDC's published list of recognised colleges covers Bangladeshi medical and dental colleges only. You won't find an "approved Malaysian universities" list on its website.
What BMDC does control is the route a foreign-trained doctor must follow to practise in Bangladesh. Score at least 40 in Bangladesh's MBBS admission test, get a BMDC Eligibility Certificate before you leave, study at a medical school recognised in Malaysia, then pass BMDC's Registration Qualifying Examination and complete a one-year internship at home. Follow that route and the BMDC recognition of your MBBS in Malaysia becomes a process you can plan, not a gamble.
Rules on GPA and test scores change from session to session. Check the current BMDC and DGHS notices, or ask a counsellor to check them with you, before you accept an offer.
BMDC Recognition for MBBS in Malaysia: The 5-Step Route
Three of these steps happen in Bangladesh, and two of them happen before you ever board a flight.
Score at least 40 in the MBBS admission test
Since the 2022-23 session, BMDC requires students who want to study MBBS abroad to sit Bangladesh's central medical admission test and score a minimum of 40 out of 100.
Get your BMDC Eligibility Certificate
Apply to BMDC with your SSC and HSC certificates and marksheets, birth registration, and your admission test admit card and result. The application fee is Tk 1,000.
Study in person at a recognised medical school
Choose a programme on the Malaysian Medical Council's recognised list, and keep your passport and visa records. BMDC later asks for proof that you stayed abroad during your studies.
Pass the Registration Qualifying Examination
After graduating, sit BMDC's Registration Qualifying Examination, held twice a year. It's a 100-mark multiple-choice paper, and the processing fee is Tk 8,000.
Complete a one-year internship, then register
Those who pass do a one-year internship at medical colleges in Bangladesh alongside local graduates, then register with BMDC to practise.
Who Can Study MBBS Abroad Under BMDC Rules?
Because the BMDC route starts with Bangladesh's own admission test, you first need to be eligible to sit it. For the 2025-26 session, the published rules were:
Combined GPA of 8.5
SSC and HSC (or equivalent) together, from the science group.
GPA 3.5 in key subjects
At least 3.5 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at HSC.
Recent HSC
HSC passed in the same calendar year as the test, or the year before.
O and A Level students
Your results must be made equivalent by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Score 40 or more
The test has 100 one-mark questions, with 0.25 deducted for each wrong answer. Below 40 is a fail.
Then BMDC's certificate
With a qualifying score, apply for your BMDC Eligibility Certificate before you travel.
These thresholds move. For the 2024 admission, the requirement was a combined GPA of 9.0 and at least 4.0 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in both SSC and HSC. Always check the rules for your own session.

Keep originals and certified copies of everything from day one in Malaysia, including every visa page. Rebuilding five years of paperwork after graduation is slow and expensive.
Is Your Malaysian Medical School Recognised in Malaysia?
Recognition at home starts with recognition at source. The Malaysian Medical Council publishes its list of recognised medical qualifications, and these well-known programmes are on it:
| University | Qualification on the MMC list | Date shown |
|---|---|---|
| Universiti Malaya | Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery | 15 January 1971 |
| IMU University | Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) | 19 February 2002 |
| UCSI University | Doctor of Medicine | 26 March 2010 |
| Taylor's University | Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) | 28 May 2015 |
| Monash University Malaysia | Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (earlier MBBS listed 26 March 2010) | 19 December 2017 |
Source: Malaysian Medical Council, List of Recognised Medical Qualifications, checked October 2026. The MMC list shows a date against each qualification.
MMC recognition means the degree is accepted in Malaysia. It doesn't replace BMDC's process. Even with a degree from one of these schools, you still need the Eligibility Certificate, the Registration Qualifying Examination and an internship to practise in Bangladesh.
Internship and Housemanship: The Malaysia-Specific Catch
Here's the part many families miss. International graduates currently cannot do housemanship in Malaysia, as Monash University Malaysia states on its housemanship and registration page. That fits the BMDC route anyway: once you pass the Registration Qualifying Examination, your one-year internship happens in Bangladesh.
Plan for the exam seriously. At the May 2025 sitting, 115 of the 418 foreign graduates who took it passed, roughly 28%. Starting revision in your final year in Malaysia is far easier than starting after you land in Dhaka.

BMDC Recognition for MBBS in Malaysia: FAQs
Is MBBS in Malaysia BMDC recognised?
BMDC doesn't publish a list of approved Malaysian universities; its public list of recognised colleges covers Bangladeshi institutions. Instead, a Malaysian MBBS leads to registration in Bangladesh through BMDC's route: score at least 40 in the MBBS admission test, get a BMDC Eligibility Certificate before you leave, study at a school on the Malaysian Medical Council's list, then pass BMDC's Registration Qualifying Examination and complete a one-year internship.
What is the BMDC Eligibility Certificate, and when do I need it?
It's the certificate BMDC issues to students who plan to study MBBS abroad, and you need it before you leave Bangladesh. The application asks for your SSC and HSC certificates and marksheets, birth registration and your MBBS admission test admit card and result, and the fee is Tk 1,000. When you graduate, BMDC asks for the original certificate before you can sit its Registration Qualifying Examination.
What score do I need in the medical admission test to study MBBS abroad?
BMDC requires a minimum of 40 out of 100 in Bangladesh's central MBBS admission test for students who want to study MBBS abroad, a rule in force since the 2022-23 session. The test has 100 one-mark questions with 0.25 deducted for each wrong answer, and a score below 40 counts as a fail.
What is the BMDC Registration Qualifying Examination?
It's the exam that graduates of foreign medical schools take to qualify for registration in Bangladesh. BMDC holds it twice a year, and notices were published for April and October 2026 sittings. The May 2025 sitting was a 100-mark multiple-choice paper, and 115 of the 418 candidates passed. The processing fee is Tk 8,000, and your degree and transcripts must be attested first.
Do I need to do an internship in Bangladesh after MBBS in Malaysia?
Yes. Graduates who pass BMDC's Registration Qualifying Examination complete a one-year internship at medical colleges in Bangladesh alongside local graduates before they can practise. You can't avoid this by staying in Malaysia, because international graduates currently cannot do housemanship there, as Monash University Malaysia confirms on its website. Plan for that extra year in your budget and timeline.
What GPA do I need to study MBBS abroad from Bangladesh?
You first need to be eligible for Bangladesh's MBBS admission test. For the 2025-26 session, that meant a combined SSC and HSC GPA of at least 8.5, with at least 3.5 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at HSC, and an HSC passed in the same or previous calendar year. These thresholds change between sessions, so check the rules for your year.
Are Monash, UCSI and Universiti Malaya recognised in Malaysia?
Yes. All three appear on the Malaysian Medical Council's List of Recognised Medical Qualifications: Universiti Malaya's MBBS (dated 1971), UCSI University's Doctor of Medicine (2010) and Monash University Malaysia's Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (2017). MMC recognition covers Malaysia only, so you still need BMDC's Eligibility Certificate, Registration Qualifying Examination and internship to practise in Bangladesh.
